Foundations Program

Required of all CVPA majors (except Art History and Music)

The Studio Art Foundations program is a rigorous and engaging program designed to promote creativity, develop understanding of the visual language, instill critical inquiry, and motivate independent learning.

Upon completion of the Foundations Program, students are expected to be able to

  1. Identify and apply the principles of composition and design.
  2. Explore, develop and apply fundamental skills and methods necessary to facilitate visual thinking.
  3. Create work with an appropriate relationship between form, content, and context when visually communicating information and ideas.
  4. Solve formal, conceptual, and communication problems through the process of self-directed exploration, trial, error, and refinement.
  5. Perform critical analysis of communication, form, and concept
  6. Discuss concepts about their visual work clearly and effectively in oral and written form.
  7. Analyze historical and current art directions in relation to their own work.

You will have the opportunity to explore the many options available in CVPA and receive an interdisciplinary education that explores 2-D and 3-D approaches, design, and art history.

All first-year students in CVPA participate in the Freshmen Visual Arts Seminar (FOU 101), a central aspect of the first-year experience. This course brings you together with peers who are passionate about an array of art disciplines and provides opportunity for you to engage with the community.

Foundations courses (FOU prefix at the 100-level) are required for all visual arts majors and serve as prerequisites for all 200 or higher-level courses in Fine Arts, Artisanry, Visual Design, and Art Education.
