Student Nurse Leadership Academy 2021

Student Leadership Alliance

The CNHS Academic Advising & Support Office provides academic advising and holistic services in support of all first-year nursing and MLS students' academic, professional, and personal goals. We do so by achieving the following objectives:

  • deliver holistic, evidence-based practices that assure quality when addressing student needs;
  • promote the shared responsibility of academic advising between individual student and advisor;
  • develop and sustain campus and community partners to promote first-year student success; and
  • evaluate and assess programs and services that lead to continual improvements that directly benefit our students.

Student Leadership Alliance (SLA)

The Student Leadership Alliance (SLA) are specially selected nursing and medical lab science (MLS) students ranging in class rank from sophomores to seniors. These students are given unique opportunity to lead and support first-year nursing and MLS majors with faculty and advising staff.

Student leaders play key roles in assisting first-year students with the transition to CNHS. Leaders complete an interactive two-day training prior to fall semester and engage in ongoing leadership development throughout the year. The goal of student leadership is to serve as a peer resource that students feel comfortable approaching with questions or concerns. Student leaders work with faculty and staff to serve as role models of professional behavior, compassionate collaboration, and academic excellence. Student leaders demonstrate pride in their Corsair and CNHS community and mirror academic excellence, belonging and wellbeing by volunteering their time to lead, support, and develop their teams with openness and authenticity.

First-Year Student Experience

Starting in June, first-year nursing and medical laboratory students will engage with Academic Advising & Support office staff throughout their first year. The AA&S office provides events and activities focused on three key areas: academic excellence, belonging, and wellbeing. The goal of the First-Year Student Experience at CNHS is to provide students with resources--which include events and activities--designed to support first-year academic, professional and personal student success goals

Academy Weekend

Academy Weekend is a two-year long experience that all students in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences must complete as part of their educational experience. Academy Weekend consists of 2.5 days where CNHS freshmen are engaged through hands-on activities and workshops that focus on teambuilding, critical thinking, reading comprehension, math and science, and health and safety.

At the conclusion of Academy Weekend, freshmen will be required to participate in academy benchmarks throughout the year that are comprised of class meetings, the Wingman Experience, meetings with their advisors and student leaders, and participation in academic enrichment activities (i.e. tutoring and workshops that focus on academic success). The total experience will be two years, from the start of year one to the end of year two.
