Advising and Course Registration

Understanding the process

An Advising Hold is added to COIN every fall and spring around mid-semester. This hold prevents enrollment in new classes. Your advisor removes the Advising Hold after you meet to plan your course schedule for the next semester.

Enrollment Dates are added to COIN when Advising Holds are activated. The Registrar also sends an email about the schedule of enrollment. You will add your own courses and make adjustments (drop/swap) as needed. Put courses in your shopping cart as soon as COIN allows.

You can finish enrolling in Spring courses as of 7:30am on your enrollment date.

Remember

Check your UMassD email often.

It’s an official means of communication, including important messages about your bill, financial aid, advising, registration, class cancellations, etc.

Familiarize yourself with COIN.

You will search for classes and add them to your cart. You also drop or swap courses as needed.

You need to understand your financial obligations & review your bill. You might have To Do Items for financial aid that must be completed in a timely manner. There could be holds preventing enrollment (e.g. RBD Hold, Emer. Contact & Address Verification Hold).

You can view your grades, some mid-term progress, and unofficial transcript.

Keep in mind...

Students must acknowledge and agree to the university’s student Financial Responsibility Agreement (FRA). This acknowledgement will be required annually for COIN access. You should understand your bill, any loans, and payment policies even if you have help covering costs. Not only is it your education, it’s your credit history too.

Progression through the program

  • Refer to the Academic Policy Handbook for details.
  • Progression rules apply for Nursing and science courses.
    • These courses must be passed successfully prior to the next year or next semester (depending on the course) for advancement in the degree.
    • Failed courses should be repeated. Recall the threshold for failing in NUR—below a 77 or a 73, depending on the course.
    • All NUR courses must be successfully completed at UMassD.
  • Failure to make good progression can jeopardize your spot in the program.

Honors students

  • NUR 102 is an Honors option you will be enrolled in.
  • Confer with your Honors advisor for questions if you are considering additional HON courses. For example:
    • ENL 102
