• Previous versions of MATLAB have all included a command flops, however, this command was discontinued in version 6 of MATLAB. I did not discover this change until after  the sixth edition had gone to press. Two exercises in the book currently make use of the flops command. These exercises are:

     page 92      Exercise 2 (a) and (b)
     page 186    Exercise 4 (b) and (c)
I will either try to get these corrected in a later printing or post new versions of them on the web.

• In the table of contents the three optional sections have been marked with both a dagger and an asterisk. The asterisk should be deleted. These sections are 2.3, 5.7, and 6.8. On page xiii of the Preface it notes that the optional sections are marked with an asterisk in the contents page. This should be changed from asterisk to dagger.
• page 338.  Exercise 9.  The variables y₁ and y₂ should be changed to x₁ and x₂ to be consistent  with the figure.
• page 469.  Exercise 13.  The equation should read  U = I - 2uu^H.
• page 535.  In the Chapter Test the answer to the first true-false question should be false.

• page 33. The 8 volt battery in the figure at the top of the page is drawn incorrectly. It should be:


• page 90.    Exercise 14 should read: Let A and B be n x n matrices and define 2n x 2n matrices S and M by...
• page 521.  In Section 2 the answer to Exercise 17 should be: x₁ = 2, x₂ = 3, x₃ = 12, x₄ = 6.
• page 525.  In Section 2 the answer to Exercise 3 should read:

                 (a), (d), and (e) are subspaces; (b), (c), and (f) are not

• page xiv  The Sixth Edition is now being bundled with the Second Edition of the ATLAST book. The correct ISBN for this bundle is 0-13-104421-4.
• page xv  In the Acknowlegements section change the second sentence to read: ... who have sent ...
• page 8.   In the last paragraph delete the sentence: "The entries to be eliminated are given in color in the matrix below" as the entries never were printed in color.
• page 19. Middle of the page - delete the note "(These entries are printed in color.)" as the entries never were printed in color.
• page 104.  The second line on the page should begin:    = a₃₁(a₁₂a₂₃ - a₁₃a₂₂) - ...
• page 108   In the cofactor expansion near the bottom of the page, the first row of the (2,3) minor should be  a₃₁  a₃₂.
• page 158.  In the first line of the proof of Corollary 3.4.2 replace the word fosr by for.
• page 169   In the sentence at the middle of the page replace E by [ v₁, v₂] and replace F by [ u₁, u₂]
• page 185.  Exercise 3(a) should refer to Exercise 19 of Section 6 rather than Exercise 17.
• page 231.  In Table 1 at the bottom of the page the last entry in the column for M6 should be 1.
• page 232   The last entry in the sixth column of Q should be 0.100 and the fourth entry of y should be 0.331.
• page 285.  In the line below the last displayed equation on the page, the subscript for w ^j-1 should be 2m rather than m.
• page 290. The second sentence on the page should read:

                The method involves using projections to transform ...
• page 304  In Table 1, the second equation in the Chebyshev column should read:  T₀ = 1
• page 392.  In the formula for the remainder R near the bottom of the page, replace 3h²kF_xyy(z) with the correct term 3h²kF_xxy(z).
• page 442   In Exercise 7 change x₂ to x₂.
• page 525.  In Section 4 delete part (b) of answer 12, as the given set does not form a subspace, so one cannot find a basis.
• page 527.  The answer to 10 (a) should be a 3 x 3 matrix. To get the correct matrix, change the sign of the diagonal entries of the 2 x 2 matrix and then augment the matrix by adding e₃ as the third column and e₃^T as the third row.

In the answer to 10 (b) the (2,1) entry of the the matrix should be 0.
• page 534.  In exercise 3(b) at the top of the page delete the equation || A ||₂ = 3.
• page 534.  Exercise 4 of Section 5 should not have two parts. Delete answer (a). The answer (b) is the answer to the entire exercise.
• page 534   In Exercise 5 (a) of Section 5 the  brackets, (   ), are missing from the vector.
• pages 534 and 535.  In Section 7 the solutions numbered 3 and 4 are actually the solutions to exercises 4 and 5 of that section.
• page 543 Delete the line with the single entry "Orthonality". The index reference should have been "Orthogonality" and the incorrect spelling created an extraneous line in the index.
