Advising

All Portuguese majors and minors are assigned a faculty advisor in the department. If you do not yet have an advisor, please contact the Department Secretary (Tracy McCree, 508-910-6586) or the Chairperson (Prof. Dário Borim, 999-6609).

Study Abroad Program

The Department of Portuguese strongly encourages students to study abroad at a Portuguese or Brazilian university for at least one semester. Scholarships are available. For further information please contact the department.

Financial Aid

The department and the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture award scholarships for the academic year and the Summer Program in Portuguese.

New England Student Program

Students from Rhode Island, Connecticut and other New England states where Portuguese is not available as a major field of study at public institutions may be eligible for tuition benefits. For further information, please consult the "Expenses and Student Financial Services" section of the UMD catalogue or contact the Department of Portuguese.

Phi Lambda Beta (National Portuguese Honor Society)

Students who have at least 18 credits in college-level Portuguese, a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.5 GPA in Portuguese courses are eligible for membership in Alpha Delta, the UMD chapter of the National Portuguese Honor Society. For further information please contact the department.

Portuguese Language Club

Portuguese Language Club is an association of UMD students dedicated to stimulating interest in the language and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world. The Club's activities have included organization of day trips, dances, dinners, and fundraisers, participation in cultural events, and volunteering at the Casa da Saudade branch of New Bedford Public Library, among others.
