Summer 2009 Courses:

POR 481/581/681/781 Transatlantic Passages in Lusophone Literatures and Cultures (3 credits)
M, T, W, Th 6:30-8:30PM
LARTS 112
Prof. Christopher Larkosh

This advanced undergraduate/graduate seminar will study the literature and cultures of the Lusophone Atlantic from a comparative perspective. Beginning with early texts that retrace Portugal's traditional relationship with the Atlantic Ocean and, by extension, the world beyond Europe, we will then explore contemporary literary production in Portuguese from mainland Portugal, the Azores, Cape Verde, Brazil and Angola.  The course will conclude with an overview of cultural production (literature, music, film, media) from migrant communities outside the official boundaries of the Lusophone world (North America, the Caribbean, Western Europe, Southern Africa).
