Michael Baum (B.A. Gettysburg College, 1987; M.A., University of Toronto, 1988; Ph.D., University of Connecticut, 1997) is associate professor and Chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He serves as co-chair of the Iberian Studies Group at Harvard University (2000-present) http://www.ces.fas.harvard.edu/people/affiliates/index.html an executive board member of UMass Dartmouth's Center for Portuguese Studies (1997-present), and an affiliate of UMass Dartmouth's Women's Studies Program (2004-present). His teaching fields include comparative politics, contemporary Portugal, transitions to democracy, political economy, and development theory. |

Baum has twice been the recipient of a Fulbright fellowship to Portugal, including a dissertation fellowship (1993) and as Fulbright Scholar (2000). He also received a doctoral research fellowship from the Luso-American Development Foundation (1994) and research grants from the Luso-American Development Foundation (1999, 2000) and the Instituto Camões (1999). Since 2000, Baum has developed and overseen a summer study abroad program in Portugal that focuses on that country’s experience with European integration www.umassd.edu/dce/lisbon. Current research topics focus on contemporary southern European politics, in particular electoral behavior in Portugal, the gender gap in political behavior, civil society and democratization, and the nature of support for gender equality in Europe. |
