- All current UMass Dartmouth students may compete for this prize.

- All faculty members of the Graduate Program in Portuguese will rate the essays (on a scale of 0 to 10). The winners will be the authors of the essays with first, second and third highest scores.
- Graduate faculty members will receive the essays without the authors' names.
- Any issues related to this prize will be resolved by the Graduate Faculty in Portuguese.
