UMD Graduate Program in Portuguese
2007 Portuguese Best Student Essay Prize
($1,000, $500 & $250)
Rules:
R1. All UMass Dartmouth current studentsmay apply for this prize.
R2. Send 12 paper copies of your original essay (paper, term paper, article, etc.) to Jean Salgado, Secretary, Department of Portuguese, Group I, Office 398G, by September 15, 2007.
R3. The essay (on literature, culture, politics, history, sociology, anthropology, art history, etc.) may be in Portuguese or in English; however, the topic must be related tothe Portuguese-speaking world. The paper should have a 100-word abstract. In addition, the format of the paper should be appropriate to the discipline, e.g., the MLA style in the Humanities.
R4. The winner of the first prize in a given year cannot participate in the following year’s contest. After being awarded a first prize, a student may apply for the prize in the second year, e.g., 2009 and 2011.
R5. All the professors of the Graduate Program in Portuguese will rate the essays (on a scale of 0 to 10). The winners will be the essays with the highest scores.
R6. Graduate faculty members will receive the essays without the authors’ names.
R7. Any issues related to this prize will be resolved by the Graduate Faculty in Portuguese.
