Hello, My name is Mary Richards and I am graduating with a degree in Interior Architecture and Design. I have been with the program for 4 years, probably the best decision I ever made. I have been involved on campus as President of our local ASID student chapter and as a member of 20 Cent fiction. I decided to do my thesis on a Jail. Something that I learned that is missing in many jails is education. So I designed a prison solely around the purpose of education and how it can help rehabilitate inmates. My concept is based off of where the project is, Lawrence MA. Lawrence is famous for its historic mill buildings where textiles used to be made, much like New Bedford. The motif of a waterwheel can be seen throughout my project on multiple substrates such as, ceiling details, my model and acoustic panels. I hope you open your mind to what a jail could be and how designing with compassion can make a world of a difference.
