If you are interested in becoming a teacher, or seeking advanced licensure, UMass Dartmouth offers both Massachusetts Initial and Professional Teaching Licensure programs at the graduate level, as well as a 5-year BA/BA MAT degree program for undergraduates. 

The format and course requirements include a mix of course work and hands-on experience in a local school.

Degrees and certificates offered:

  • Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Initial License — Elementary (Not accepting new applicants for academic year 2012-2013)
  • Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Initial LIcense— Middle/Secondary
  • MAT Program — Elementary (Master of Arts in Teaching) (Not accepting new applicants for academic year 2012-2013)
  • Initial License and MAT Program Elementary (Not accepting new applicants for academic year 2012-2013)
  • Initial License and MAT Program—Middle/Secondary
  • 5-Year — BA/BS Initial License and MAT Program, Elementary (Not accepting new applicants for academic year 2012-2013)
  • 5-Year — BA/BS Initial License and MAT Program, Middle/Secondary

Leading to Elementary or Middle & Secondary licensure in the following areas:

  • Biology (8-12)
  • Chemistry (8-12)
  • English (5-8), (8-12)
  • Foreign Literature and Languages (French, Portuguese, and Spanish) (5-12)
  • General Science (5-8)
  • History (5-8), (8-12)
  • Political Science/Political Philosophy (8-12)
