Dr. Carlos Benavides is Associate Professor of Spanish language, literature and linguistics, and Chair of the Department of Foreign Literature and Languages at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He received his Ph.D. degree in Linguistics from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and his M.A. also in Linguistics from the University of Texas at El Paso. He has a Licenciatura en Administración de Empresas (B.A. in Business Management) from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras. Dr. Benavides’ research interests include Hispanic linguistics, semantics, and morphology. His most recent research deals with the importance of Conceptual Structure to linguistic analysis, as well as the use of corpora to support theoretical investigations and as an important tool in language teaching. He has taught a wide range of Spanish language, culture, literature, and linguistics courses and seminars at the advanced, intermediate and elementary levels, including Spanish Composition and Conversation, Culture and Civilization of Latin America, Latin American Literature in Translation, Linguistic Analysis and Latin America Literature, Language and the Mind (Intro to Linguistics), Origin and Evolution of the Romance Languages, Medical Spanish and Business Spanish. Dr. Benavides has consistently incorporated service learning projects in his courses, and has been instrumental in promoting the institutionalization of this teaching methodology at UMD.

Dr. Benavides was the recipient of the 2018 Faculty Civic Leadership Award for his significant contributions to advance UMass Dartmouth's mission of promoting engaged learning through his service learning courses, and he was nominated (by a student) for the campus-wide 2018 Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching, for his “unique teaching strategies and great enthusiasm for education and multiculturalism.”

Dr. Benavides is a member of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA), the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), where he serves as College/University Representative on the Board of Directors.
