Change of major standards

If you are currently a University of Massachusetts Dartmouth student, you may apply to change to a major within the College of Engineering1 by meeting the requirements2 listed below (Change of Major Handout).

Bioengineering

Cumulative GPA: 2.000 or higher and

  • a grade of C or better in MTH 151 and MTH 152
  • a grade of C or better in CHM 151 and CHM 152
  • a grade of C or better in PHY 113

Requirements must be met within three consecutive semesters from the start of the first required course attempted for the first time.

Civil Engineering

Cumulative GPA: 2.500 or higher and

  • a grade of B or better in MTH 151 and CHM 151 or
  • a grade of C- or better in MTH 151 and CHM 151 and PHY 113

Requirements must be met within three consecutive semesters from the first attempt of MTH 151.

Computer Science

Cumulative GPA of 2.300 or higher and

  • a grade of C or better in a computer programming course (CIS 180 preferred)

Requirements must be met within three consecutive semesters from the first attempt of the course. The list of computer programming courses would include CIS 115, CIS 180, CIS 190, ECE 160, and MTH 280. Other computer programming courses could be considered following approval by the CIS Chairperson.

Computer Engineering

Cumulative GPA of 2.500 or higher and

  • complete the following courses with a GPA of 2.500 or higher (all courses attempted are included in this GPA calculation). Courses must be completed at UMassD. If repeating a course, only the most recent attempt is used.
    • Two courses from: ECE 160, ECE 201, ECE 256, and ECE 260 
    • Two courses from: MTH 151, MTH 152, MTH 211, and MTH 212
    • One course from: PHY 113 and PHY 114

Requirements3 must be met within three consecutive semesters from the first attempt of the first ECE course. In addition, students must complete at least two of the listed ECE courses and have an ECE GPA of 2.500 or higher (if more than two ECE courses from the list are attempted, all are included in this GPA calculation).

Data Science

Cumulative GPA of 2.300 or higher and

  • meet one of the following options:
    • a grade of C- or better in MTH 151
    • a grade of C or better in CIS 180
    • a grade of C or better in DSC 201

Electrical Engineering

Cumulative GPA of 2.500 or higher and

  • complete the following courses with a GPA of 2.500 or higher (all courses attempted are included in this GPA calculation). Courses must be completed at UMassD. If repeating a course, only the most recent attempt is used.
    • Two courses from: ECE 160, ECE 201, and ECE 260 
    • Two courses from: MTH 151, MTH 152, MTH 211, and MTH 212
    • One course from: PHY 113 and PHY 114

Requirements3 must be met within three consecutive semesters from the first attempt of the first ECE course. In addition, students must complete at least two of the listed ECE courses and have an ECE GPA of 2.500 or higher (if more than two ECE courses from the list are attempted, all are included in this GPA calculation).

Mechanical Engineering

Cumulative GPA: 2.500 or higher and

  • a grade of C or better in MTH 151, MTH 152, and PHY 113

Requirements must be met within three consecutive semesters from the first attempt of MTH 151.

Physics

Cumulative GPA: 2.000 or higher and

  • a grade of C or better in MTH 151 and PHY 113

1 These requirements do not apply to Engineering Undeclared (EGR-BS) students.

2 CHM 153, MTH 153, MTH 154, and PHY 111 are considered equivalent courses to and may be used in place of CHM 151, MTH 151, MTH 152, and PHY 113, respectively.

3 Students currently majoring in the College of Engineering are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
