Biography

Dr. Chen is currently Chancellor Professor Emeritus (since June 2010) of electrical and computer engineering, at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he has taught since 1968. His research areas are in statistical pattern recognition and signal/image processing with applications to remote sensing, medical imaging, geophysical, underwater acoustics & nondestructive testing problems; as well as computer vision for video surveillance; time series analysis; and machine learning. Dr Chen has published over 150 journal articles and has edited and authored 37 books in his areas of research.

He was Associate Editor for IEEE Trans on Geoscience and Remote Sensing 1985-2000, and International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence from 1986–2008. Since 2008 he has been an Editorial Board Member of Pattern Recognition Journal. Currently he is also the Series Editor in Computer Vision for World Scientific Publishing, and Series Editor of Signal and Image Processing of Earth Observations for CRC Press. Dr Chen has been a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) since 1988, a Life Fellow of the IEEE since 2003, and Fellow of the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR) since 1996. He is also a full member of Academia of NDT International (since 2010).

At UMass Dartmouth, Dr. Chen has graduated 11 Ph.D. students and over 80 MSEE students, including the the first PhD recipient from the electrical engineering program. His other professional activities include serving as president of Information Research Foundation (since 1999), and president of Information Research Laboratory (1983-2019), both located at Dartmouth, MA, USA.
He also has served as director of two NATO Research Workshops (1982 and 1987) and one NATO Advanced Study Institute (1978) in addition to a number of IEEE workshops and symposiums.
