University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School of Law Assistant Professor Lisa Owens was recently featured in The New York Times for her expertise on surveillance and public housing, commenting on a growing trend of smart monitoring devices in affordable housing units.

In the piece, which examined a Concord, N.H. housing authority's use of sensors originally designed for Airbnb hosts, Owens spoke to the privacy concerns these technologies raise for residents. "You can see why this would cause not only a sense of unease among residents who are already at risk of falling through whatever safety net exists, but can have real privacy implications as well," she noted. Her insights underscore the complex balance between enforcement technology and the rights of vulnerable communities, a topic she has written on extensively.
