Matthew Nerdig is a Graphic Designer currently finishing his BFA in Graphic design at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Statement

These books are a collection of Russian and American prison tattoos. I have always been fascinated by art that has its origin in dark situations, and prison tattoos certainly qualify. The visual language used in these tattoos can range from literal to very obscure. I am making this book to illustrate and explain what these tattoos can mean. I approach it visually by making it look like an official guard handbook.
