Bachelor of Science: Interior Architecture + Design

Michael Moriconi headshot

Hi there! My name is Michael Moriconi and I am a graduating senior in the Interior Architecture and Design program here at UMass Dartmouth. My senior thesis has consisted of building interior environments for the surface of Mars. Dubbed “The Auroras,” this Living / Working Community is inspired by the Northern Lights. After much research it was evident that the role of the Interior Designer would become imperative to the design process of colonizing other planets. NASA has confirmed it will be sending its first human-led expedition to Mars in the next ten years. This is prompting many companies to start commercializing space travel. The goal for this design is to fuse the need for functional technology, and design that mitigates mental health problems that arise during elongated confinement. Through color, vegetation, and technology this project will analyze and implement strategies to help occupants live happier and healthier lives on the surface of Mars.
