About Grace Sylvia

Grace Sylvia is an Illustrator that was born and raised in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Illustration was always a big interest for Grace. Grace has always looked up to her grandfather who was always creating art. She is inspired by nature, the ocean, and the world around her. Aside from illustration, Grace also enjoys ceramics, jewelry making, playing the piano and guitar. She hopes to combine these interests to make art that can create conversation and that holds a deeper meaning; not only for her but for her audience as well. Grace is hoping to further explore her artistic journey by attending the post baccalaureate program at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in the fall.

Statement

Just below the surface

For my senior capstone project, I focused on a dark subject, anxiety and depression. Ever since I could remember I have struggled with anxiety and depression. I really wanted to push how far I could go with this idea of portraying something that you cannot quite see on the surface. Anxiety and depression can be very difficult subjects to understand. There is this stigma around mental health, and it can be a very touchy subject. I do not believe that anyone should be treated differently because of something that is completely out of their control or be afraid to reach out for help. Anxiety and depression can be crippling at times, where even getting out of bed seems impossible. Some people are lucky enough to have never experienced anxiety or depression. The purpose of my project is to bring light and understanding to the people who may not quite understand these mental illnesses. I also wanted to create these for the ones who do struggle with anxiety and depression; hoping they can connect with the images and emotions and feel like they are being heard. You are not alone.

Over these last few semesters I’ve really seen myself grow as an artist and seen my work grow as well. I feel like I’ve gained more confidence in my ability to create things that I’m proud of. This capstone project I feel made me jump out of my comfort zone. The subject I chose is very personal and difficult to talk about but I wanted to make a statement and bring light to something that I am passionate about.
