Art + Design: Illustration

About Jade Miner

Jade Miner is an Illustrator and Designer fascinated by the intersection of illustration and graphic design. Walking on the fine line between the two worlds and allowing them to coalesce in her work, Jade neither defines her work as one nor the other. This fusion allows for a wide variety of work as well as an individualistic approach to new-age illustration. Jade’s portfolio displays playfully bright but carefully chosen colors to create visual dissonance and harmony. This understanding of color coupled with her characteristically brimful texture and mark-making allows for a diverting consistency in her work.

Statement

My senior thesis is about replicability and marketability. I wanted to create a body of work with a specific work-flow to allow for a regularity in color and texture; this ensured that the outcome would present an extremely uniform style. This body of work I set out to create would be flexible in application which would allow me to create a stationery set (or stationery product line) fit for market. This set would include: a calendar, planner, greeting cards and patterns. The stationery set consisted of 12 polished fruit-themed illustrations to be utilized in the design process of the items in the set. This project would allow me to take advantage of my interest in the unification of illustration and design.

The process included a pre-determined color palette and brush set chosen through exploration in media. Using Procreate, I was able to carefully re-watch my drawing process (using the intuitively integrated time-lapse recording feature) to figure out why certain works were more successful than others. This allowed me to replicate the proven procedures in new works and revise previous works to ensure consistency. The last piece to the consistency puzzle was my subject matter- there had to be a theme to drive home this idea of unity. I chose fruit for my subject matter because of the plethora of options I had when it came to hand-picking what to draw, but my other reason for choosing this theme is relatability. Everyone likes fruit! It’s beautiful, it’s classy and its tasty. And arguably most important, I love drawing fruit.

My intention is for this project to go beyond my senior thesis. I am planning to open up my own illustration & design storefront online this summer and continue this style, that I’ve become quite fond of, to add more collections and more works to share and sell.
