Art + Design: Graphic Design

About Sarah Dorman

I am a senior in the Graphic Design program at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. I have been a graphic designer for nine years, starting when I chose the graphic design shop while attending a vocational high school in Westford MA, and continuing in college. I first attended Mount Ida, and then transferred to UMass Dartmouth. I have always enjoyed art, did a lot of painting and drawing growing up, and proudly brought home many elementary and middle school art projects, some of which are still on display in my parents’ house. My biggest inspirations for pursuing design are my high school shop teachers, Derik Rochon and Nathan Meharg. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have even known that graphic design was a career option, one I will enjoy for the rest of my life. My design process is to make things clear, clean, and concise to ensure designs that an audience will enjoy seeing and can relate to. I will be receiving my Graphic Design degree in May 2021.

Statement

The topic for this project is a study of LGBTQ history. Since this is a topic not traditionally taught in classrooms, much information isn’t well known, even when there was an important impact on events currently taught. Encouraging people to learn about historical LGBTQ figures who made a positive impact on the world and represent this select group of people is very important.

To do this, a series of magazines have been complied into a book to help make people aware of this history and give everyone an opportunity to learn about it. The title of this series, Queer Year, is meant to highlight and cover events that will help people, both those who are part of the LGBTQ community and those who are not, learn more about the struggles and impact the people in this community have made throughout history.
