About Destiny Lee Matos

Destiny is a Graphic Designer from New Bedford, Massachusetts. She is graduating from the College of Visual and Performing Arts with her BFA in Graphic Design in May of 2023. Her love for art and design began at an early age. After being told she would never make it or any money, she abandoned her dream of pursuing the arts, only after a huge life change, she decided to change her major at Bristol Community College as a Fine Arts major – which then led to Graphic Design. After graduating with her Associates, she transferred to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts where she worked with many different mediums to broaden her experience range. She loves typography and publication design and takes risks with her designs. Her motto is “trust the process.”

Statement

Allogeneous is a magazine that is the humor version of the “Utne Reader.” I wanted to bring back the experience of reading something that is in your hands, where you can turn the page, you can even toss it around. I also created this concept because I wanted to design a publication without the stressors of creating written content. I wanted to have fun with my work, and I did exactly that.

I feel that everything is on our screens these days. I miss the days of sitting in a large neighborhood bookstore being surrounded by books. This is how I fell in love with reading. As someone with ADHD, reading online just is not possible for me and it made me less encouraged to read. My favorite thing to do was read when I was younger but as the physical publication's prints became phased out, my interest fizzled out. There is nothing better than feeling the difference in weight of the pages between my fingertips, the smell of a new book or magazine, and the sounds of the pages turning. This is why I chose publication design as my capstone.
