Statement

Musical theater and graphic novels have always been interests of mine. As a child, I remember watching musicals on repeat, and reading graphic novel adaptations of my favorite movies. This project provided the opportunity to explore ways to blend the two by adapting live musical productions into graphic novels. In the process, I have realized the potential of adaptation to introduce those otherwise not theater-inclined or able to access live theater to these incredible stories through a new format.

For the project, I adapted five scenes from various musical theatre productions into graphic novel forms, each with its own unique tone and history: Hadestown, Ghost Quartet, The Grinning Man, Wicked, and Spring Awakening. A minimum of three full-color pages were completed for each, as well as a front and back cover and character design sheets for the chosen scene. Each comic represents an excerpt from a hypothetical complete graphic novelization of the play.
