Statement
This thesis project proposes a mixed-use space that combines a tattoo studio and café to create an inclusive, welcoming environment for both clients and their guests. As tattooing increasingly becomes a shared social experience, the design supports group visits by providing comfortable gathering and waiting areas that do not interfere with the sterile requirements of the tattoo workspace.
The café component responds to tattoo artists’ common recommendation that clients eat and hydrate before appointments, offering nourishing food and drinks to help prepare guests physically for the tattoo process.
The project aims to expand the tattoo experience beyond the individual client to include their companions, while reducing the stigma and discomfort sometimes associated with traditional tattoo shops. Design considerations include reimagined waiting areas, accessibility and ADA compliance, thoughtful circulation and parking, nourishment, and LGBTQ+ affirming elements to ensure that all visitors feel safe, welcomed, and supported.
