About Christine Sebastiao
Christine Sebastiao is a graduating senior in the Interior Architecture and Design program at UMass Dartmouth. Her work centers on creating spaces that thoughtfully balance aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. She is passionate about designing environments that are not only visually compelling, but also purposeful and responsive to the people who inhabit them.
Guided by empathy and intention, Christine approaches each project as an opportunity to elevate everyday life. She is especially interested in how design can foster well-being, encourage meaningful interaction, and create a lasting sense of belonging. Through careful attention to detail, she strives to design spaces that positively shape how people engage with the world around them.
Statement
The senior thesis, Elemental Wellness Retreat, is a holistic retreat destination nestled in the scenic Green Mountains of Plymouth, Vermont, featuring a spa, boutique hotel, and dining space alongside wellness experiences such as nutrition workshops, fitness classes, and outdoor activities. Designed to support mental and physical well-being, the retreat fosters a deep connection to the natural environment. Inspired by the four classical elements—Earth, Air, Fire, and Water—the retreat is organized into distinct zones, each reflecting the symbolic and sensory qualities of its respective element. Through multisensory spaces that evoke stability, renewal, energy, and flow, guests are encouraged to reconnect with themselves and the surrounding landscape. By integrating biophilic design principles with elemental symbolism, the project demonstrates how design can serve as a bridge between the built environment and the natural world, highlighting nature’s role as a powerful catalyst for healing the mind and body.
