About Jocelyn Coyne

Jocelyn Coyne is an illustrator from the middle of nowhere in Western Massachusetts. As a naturalist at heart, her illustration follows suit and often explores organic shapes and physical mediums such as ink. Even more prevalent throughout her art are dark physical and psychological elements that blend into their own medium of stylized expression. Stemming from the deep held belief that beauty only exists when balanced with its counterpart; ugliness, imperfection, whatever you wish to call it. She enjoys creating treasure from trash.

Statement

My Capstone explores several themes that intrigue me such as the supernatural, kinesthesis, near death experiences, and the journey of souls. Titled Angel Massacre, the story follows a single main character through their last moments and into the afterlife where they are forced to confront their unfinished business. This psychic unraveling plays out in a graphic nightmarish struggle between the main character and angelic figures which gives us the title.

An important focus throughout the entire work down to the art style is the universal tension of two forces depicted through black and white. This style is alluring to me as I have a fascination with humanity and all our dysfunctions regarding the processing of duality in our heads, such as black and white thinking. As the corpse of the story dissolves back into the universe, an allegorical picture of the descent into madness emerges.

Angel Massacre as a story is definitely not for everyone, with the morbidity it possesses, but for those who are willing to listen to its message, I am hoping they will be able to take away some insight into the battle for the human soul.
