About Meg Delp

Meg Delp is a mixed-media painter and sequential artist inspired by the intensified color and texture of the post-impressionist movement, as well as the idiosyncratic stories and art styles found in the indie comics scene. Their work is driven by academic curiosity and research, taking inspiration from a diverse range of subjects and genres. Meg borrows ideas from marine biology, cosmic horror, and family dynamics to create fantastical worlds with familiar building blocks. After graduating from UMass Dartmouth, Meg is on course to earn an MFA in Visual Narrative from Boston University in 2028. They plan to pursue a career in art education.

Statement

Ocean Child is a painted horror comic that uses loose brushwork reminiscent of impressionism to portray dreamlike and horrific situations. Using these painterly methods suggests that the uncanny moments that occur in the story are beyond the characters’ comprehension. The story is Inspired by the accidental horror she finds in scientific illustration, the biological phenomenon of a whalefall, and the contrasting types of psychological and eldritch horror in H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow Over Innsmouth. In Ocean Child we wade into unease with a tense relationship between a lighthouse keeper and her daughter, until we witness a startling mutation in the local wildlife, and an even more terrifying change in the girl who witnessed it.
