About Roxie Hawley

Roxie Hawley is a Massachusetts-based illustrator and animator who works with both digital and traditional media. Roxie's artistic inspirations are mainly found in nature, books and animated media. In her work, Roxie combines the visual language of 2D animation with naturalistic color and texture. Vibrance and expression are key focuses in her work, capturing light, human emotion and the volatility of life.

Statement

As a little water fairy studies the brooks and streams of her surroundings, she ventures into the woods where she hasn’t journeyed before. She runs into a stray wingless fairy who has been stranded in the forest; she has survived on the outskirts of society for a mysteriously long time with nothing but her land animal knowledge and a porcupine friend who lets her use his shed quills to make tools. This collection of illustrations are displayed together in a book with various prints on the side. My project is inspired by the work of various folklore artists, including but not limited to Ida Rentoul Outhwaite’s fairy/animal pieces from the 1920s-30s, Beatrix Potter’s observational sketchbooks, the textured backgrounds of Cartoon Saloon, and the expressive character work of Alison Bechdel.
