About Shania Brouwer

Shania Brouwer is a graduating senior majoring in Interior Architecture + Design and minoring in Business Administration. Through her academic experience, Shania has invested her time into understanding the impact of design on humans and the environment. Design has been an outlet that has allowed Shania to do work that both stimulates her creative mind and applies compassion to projects. Integrating sustainable practices has allowed Shania to incorporate the environment into her projects and secretly gives her an excuse to express her love for plants by designing biophilic spaces.

Statement

Modeling a community-oriented space that incorporates a farmers’ market will facilitate the exploration of the role that botanical greenhouses and access to fresh produce could reduce food deserts and foster social interaction, education, and healthy living. The circumstances that bring this research to light are the apparent need for solutions to food deserts in modern day cities and the push for WELL spaces that prioritize the well-being of human occupants as well as biophilic design. Food deserts are defined by low-income areas with low access to transportation to healthy foods (Pyzyk 2019). The renovation and reuse of 42 Edison St, New Bedford, MA will be the site for the development; located approximately half mile away from the Church Street train station. This location allows the site to connect a multitude of communities. 

Employing historical, observational, and interactive research methods creates a wide view of both past, present, and future successes, challenges, and needs that will influence the program that the space is designed for. The researcher will connect a multi-use space into a seamless design; combining a market, study, and recreation areas to create a central amenity and sanctuary space for local communities and food deserts. On a larger scale, the design of a botanical farmer’s market will support local farmers, artisans, and people. Contributing to the body of knowledge, it is anticipated that this thesis will establish an important precedent that can be analyzed and referred to as a model or inspiration. 

THE AMBER, Boutique 5-star hotel design located in downtown Providence, RI where the lamplight lingers and time slows. A conceptual design inspired by the historical lamp posts seen around downtown.
MURMUR, A fusion restaurant design inside The Amber that emulates the sounds that create the liveliness of downtown. The space offers a cozy eating and drinking experience where the river hums and echoes carry soft melodies.
MATERNITY, A LDPR design located at Newton-Wellesley Hospital that focuses on patient, staff, and visitor comfortability through biophilic design, adjustability, and flexible space use.
ZALIA’S ZEN DEN, A cottage design that blends both organic and modern styles to achieve a space that encapsulates the client’s personal style and streamlines the function of the space.
SUSPENSION SAFARI MEETS DREAM HOUSE, Lighting design that is made from sustainable and renewable banana fabric that molds delicately to connect its form. The pendant is pictured in a dream house design project that reflects the designer’s love for wooden elements.
ZEROCO2 OFFICE, A sustainable office design for a b certified corporation named ZEROCO2 that brings together communities to revitalize deforested lands. The design aims to achieve a space that is both intuitive, ergonomic, and sustainable while bringing the company together in a biophilic space.
