Admissions requirements

In addition to the online application, please submit the following materials:

  • Statement of purpose (minimum 300 words): indicate your graduate study objectives, research/creative interests and experience, undergraduate and graduate experience, and business or industry experience, as applicable. We will use this essay to assess how well your academic interests and long-range goals match the academic program to which you are applying. If you are also applying for a teaching or research assistantship, include any special skills or experience that would assist us in our decision. Be sure that your name and the name of your desired program appear on the first page.
  • Resume.
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended (regardless of whether a credential was earned or not).

Doctoral programs

  • Must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher to be considered.
  • Minimum GRE of 300. The GRE can be waived for applicants with a prior graduate degree from an accredited US institution.
  • Applicant must have a minimum of 2 semesters (or 3 quarter sequence) of calculus and have strong quantitative skills.
  • Successful applicants generally have had undergraduate coursework in statistics/experimental design and in life science/biomedical science.
  • Statement of purpose (300 words):
    • The statement should include your academic and professional background, research credentials, and career plans as they relate to the degree program. Discuss research experience (academic, industrial) and any publications, grants, or patents.
    • Indicate your specific areas of interest within Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology so that an appropriate fit in the program can be determined. If you have a specific interest in working with one or more of the program’s faculty, describe that specific interest and identify those faculty members.

Program requirements

Admission to the MSF program is available to qualified candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Candidates must submit the required application materials and application fee to the Graduate School. Applications are reviewed and judged on the following criteria:

  • Previous college experience.
  • Official transcript from all institutions of higher education ever attended is required. The transcript must show dates attended, final grades, and credits earned. Applicants who attended a college/university outside the United States must have their official transcripts translated into English, by a credit evaluation service, showing final GPA scores.
  • GMAT exam (or equivalent). LSAT or GRE could be substituted for the GMAT exam.
  • Official GMAT score minimum of 400 required. Waived if certain criteria are met.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • Essay of 200-300 words describing the applicant’s motivation and goals.
  • Current resume.
