Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility
Multi-Discipline Engineer Recruitment

The Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility, located in Natick, MA, is responsible for the research, development, testing, evaluation and engineering support for uniforms and protective clothing ensembles utilized by Navy sailors and other military warfighters.

NCTRF is currently accepting applications for a three year (maximum) training and education program for an engineer (textiles, materials, mechanical, or fire science) through the Department of the Navy Acquisition Intern Program (NAIP), a highly selective training and education program. Upon successful completion of the training program, you will become a NCTRF civil service employee in the competitive service.

Your knowledge and skills will be utilized across matrix teams as you coordinate your efforts with NCTRF's textile technologists, clothing designers, and engineers, all focused on the personal protection of today's warfighter. Engineering tasks will include the design, development, improvement, application, test and evaluation of engineered personal protection systems for Department of Defense personnel. Such systems provide protection against military and environmental threats including thermal energy, chemical and biological warfare agents, fragmentation, flame contact, etc. In addition, you will be responsible for developing, modifying and/or utilizing specialized instrumentation to determine flame and thermal energy protection, burn injury potential, insulation value, moisture vapor permeability, etc. of materials and engineered personal protection systems. Knowledge of polymer science or materials, mechanical or textile engineering principles is beneficial.

Polymer/Material Science Internship - Summer 2008

Summer internship for a sophomore or junior college student majoring in Material Science or Chemistry with a strong academic record (GPA of at least 3.0), is available in the Center for Material Science at Bose Corporation.

A successful candidate should have prior laboratory research experience (internship or undergraduate research program) in chemistry, material science, or related fields. An ideal candidate would demonstrate interest in hands-on laboratory research on proprietary projects (results cannot be used for course credit or publication) and possess strong attention to detail and excellent record keeping skills.

The Intern will develop and refine methods to synthesize, scale up, characterize and coat polymer materials. The intern will also assist in long term laboratory testing of experimental electrochemical components, materials, and devices. Associated with these tasks the Intern will act as an assistant lab manager, maintaining the chemistry laboratory, preparing and providing materials for research activities.

The internship will be 40 hours per week, compensation will be commensurate with education and experience.

Location of internships: Bose Corporate Headquarters, located west of Boston in Framingham, MA. It is about a 35 minute drive from downtown Boston, just off the Massachusetts Turnpike. No public transportation is available, so interns must have reliable transportation to our facilities.
