Art + Design: Fashion Design
About Abigail Soares
Abi grew up in Fairhaven, a small town on the south coast of Massachusetts. Family and art have always been a part of her life. Her grandfather, an art educator, would explore painting, drawing and other mediums with her from a very young age. Her love for her grandfather made the process of creating and making art a very personal experience. The Soares family loved movies which started a love for Cosplay, mostly on Halloween. Shopping for fabrics and recreating the looks of her favorite characters with her mother was what inspired Abi to study fashion Design. Abi has focused her work on the bridal industry. Working at David’s Bridal in sales, styling and alterations.
On their wedding day, everyone wants to let their personality shine. The current bridal landscape designs for the princess and debutant. What if you don’t identify with that popular ideal? A bride should be able to express herself through her gown on her special day. Abigail’s inspiration comes from the music of artists such as Blink- 182, Nirvana and The Foo Fighters. The type of bride that would wear her gowns would be listening to these bands at work, the gym or on a long car ride. Visually, Abi is inspired by the work of filmmaker Tim Burton: The Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands. Sally, Emily and Kim act as her muse and target, to form a vision for her alternative bride.
