About Ethan Moyer

Hello, I’m Ethan, I’ve been a bit of an artist all my life; taking art classes out of school while growing up, and doodling little guys on my school papers. My favorite pastimes were art and video games, immersing me into worlds with cool characters and stories. A few years before college one my best friends introduced me to the tabletop rpg, Dungeons and Dragons, and that became my favorite thing ever.

Coming into UMass Dartmouth I felt lost on where I wanted to go art career-wise. I knew one thing though, putting aside my future career for a moment, I needed to start my own D&D campaign, create my own world and tell its story. And that I managed to accomplish, taking until sophomore year for it to become something I now cherish. That game is still going strong though nearing its conclusion. Still unsure of the future, my focus on art has somewhat shifted, yes I still draw illustrations but now I’ve become a much better writer, which I didn’t expect to ever happen. I’ve written a lot for D&D, ranging from creating original stories, unique abilities, spells, magic items, monsters, races, classes, dungeons, and lore, all so much more than I’ve drawn over the college years.

Statement

So of course I had to make my capstone about something D&D related. I decided to attempt to create a video game trailer starring the first cast of characters of my D&D campaign titled, Chronicles of Efimeros. It’s set in a strange world with three main regions, a forest, an ocean, and  a desert. But what surrounds everything is a void, at the edge of the world there is a steep cliff that goes off into nothingness.

With this trailer for this faux game that definitely will exist some day I wanted to explore some simple storytelling hooks and also introduce gameplay combat mechanics that I’ve designed. I decided to go with an older PS1 low poly 3D art style, because I think it is charming. It also turns out to be less work intensive and nostalgic looking, and just makes you think “game” so it was the perfect path.

To accompany the animation trailer I also plan to have a video game case prop, complete with a cover art, a disc design, and a game manual like the ones you’d use to see in many physical copies of video games.
