About Priscilla Koroma

Priscilla Koroma is an Integrated Studio Arts Major graduating with a BFA at UMass Dartmouth. Her philosophy aims to use art as a channel for activism, advocacy and social change, addressing pressing contemporary issues. Storytelling is at the core of her mission and specialization. Although her work is primarily concentrated on graphic studies, she also utilizes other mediums such as video art to convey her social commentary. The essence of her practice seeks to distill and encapsulate the ethos of modern dysfunction, employing a multidisciplinary approach to tell human stories and challenge preconceived notions.

Statement

The defining philosophy that anchors my practice is activism. Social commentary permeates throughout the entirety of my visual language. I aspire to use the profound power of art to relate the experiences that shape our everyday outlook on life. My work critiques the powers that be, defining mass media, the government, and the ruling elites' immense influence in the way that we perceive reality.

With this exhibition entitled The System of the Century, I intended to deliver a three part visual and graphic study of the status quo and establishment. My magazine is a series of collages that tells a narrative touching on subjects such as materialism, beauty standards, and mass entertainment, weaving through a series of twenty-four pieces. I decided to name the magazine SYSTEMIC, a nod to the analysis of structures and their role and function in society. The magazine is called the SYSTEMIC because it seeks to deconstruct and analyze the way that systems impact our decisions, economies and behaviors. It draws from imagery and iconography reminiscent of the early 2000s/Y2K era, featuring a mix of beauty icons, showbiz references, and surrealist aura.  My mixed media canvases are a triptych that further explores themes such as patriotism and the American project, augmenting my thesis on a broader, more impactful scale. The video piece I created blends critique with an immersive composite of miscellaneous pop cultural visuals.
