Art + Design: Animation + Game Arts
About Spencer “Fiend” Pepin
My name is Spencer, or better known as Fiend online. I have taken a weird turn into being “the weird doll guy” and I’m kinda starting to own it.
I have had a lifelong passion for video games and dolls. Going into AGA I thought I was going to be a 2D animator, but digital 3D stole my heart. I took a digital sculpting class and it totally changed my life, I thought I’d want to 3D model for games, but my life took a strange and wonderful pivot to dolls. I saw my digital 3D characters and said “well… why don’t I make them real?”. So, in the winter of 2022 I bought my first 3D printer with a Christmas bonus I got from my salon job.
I travel a lot for doll events and I am currently gearing up for the UK BJD Con in Birmingham, England this May where I will be vending.
Statement
When I was pitching my capstone idea, I knew I’d be going off the rails a bit but I didn’t expect this to be perfectly honest. I had originally set out to make one doll. I made five. Plus a whole 3’x3’x4’ room. I was really passionate about the project and I went a little crazy with it.
For this project some of the weird things I’ve done are whittling drumsticks out of wood by hand, rolling tiny cigarettes, and breaking drywall in the parking lot of a Home Depot. I had a lot of fun doing this project and I put a lot of heart into it.
My dolls all represent characters that I have had rattling around in my brain for about a decade. My main inspiration is music and musicians I love. The inspiration ranges from outfits, hairstyles, and names to even using musicians as reference for facial features and body type. I have so many pictures of Alex from Cannibal Corpse saved.
The universe of the Fiend Crew consists of the band and their support. Will, Zero, Aleksi, and Kel are the Fiend Crew; a deathcore band struggling to find gigs and pay rent. The boys are often put back in line by their manager Yngve and mentored by their producer and death metal veteran Xander.
