Statement
Bisclavret is a 12th- century lai written by Marie de France and translated by Professor Judith P. Shoaf. The story follows a nobleman who sheds his clothes—and his humanity— to become a bisclavret, a werewolf. Betrayed by his horrified wife and trapped within lupine form by her suitor, Bisclavret is found and treasured by the king, who appreciates him far beyond his beastly appearance.
I first fell in love with this poem in high school and was deeply comforted by Bisclavret’s queerness and struggle with identity. After opening up about his true self and being betrayed by the person he trusted most, he is left abandoned. The king’s wonder and unconditional love offer Bisclavret acceptance, the likes of which he had never experienced before. To his wife, he was a fearsome monster, but to the king, Bisclavret is the most marvelous creature in the world. This poem was uniquely affirming while I explored my own identity. I have always found myself coming back to it as I continue my own journey. With this picture book adaptation, I want to offer the story to others who may find the same comfort in it that I do.
