Art + Design: Graphic Design

Biography

Kaleigh King is a graphic designer from Massachusetts. She is currently based in the greater Boston area and will be receiving her BFA from the College of Visual and Performing Arts as well as a minor in Business Administration at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this spring of 2020. Kaleigh is inspired through creative curiosity and experience thus leading her down the path to explore many forms of art. Through this interest she explores the relationship between digital and handmade: two dimensional versus three dimensional: visual versus tactile, bringing them all together to create an experience for her audience. She enjoys illustration, print, packaging, silk screening and brand development as well as having a great interest in sustainability. She hopes her design work can help inspire others to live a more sustainable life to help pursue a better future.

Statement

Inspired by her passion for sustainability, RE is a handmade t-shirt brand that breaks down the components of sustainability to promote a brighter more sustainable future. From using 100% eco-friendly t-shirts to repurposing wood shipping pallets to create a pop-up style display, RE embodies the values to do business that is good for the people and for the planet. Through her research, Kaleigh was able to break down and define sustainability into six main components: reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose, repair and regenerate. With a main design focusing on all these components, Kaleigh hand-screened the RE logo and a compilation of “re-” words that all fall under the umbrella of sustainability. Along with the type elements, she upcycled fabric swatches creating a patchwork pocket and layer of uniqueness to each shirt. As a brand, Kaleigh wanted to put emphasis on sustainability through the methods of creation and materials as well as embrace the handmade variability that make each shirt one of a kind. With the development of covid-19, Kaleigh had to adapt and transform the direction of RE. Due to limited to no access to studio space and materials, the goal of full sustainability was not reached to its fullest potential. Looking towards the future, Kaleigh hopes to expand her line of products with limited shirt designs focusing solely on one component of sustainability at a time. She will work towards eliminating any waste she produces and finding more sustainable processes of creating and running a business with the goal of pure sustainability. The RE t-shirt designs are a new but subtle approach to bring awareness and start a conversation surrounding sustainability and our role for a better tomorrow.
