Art + Design: Painting

Biography

Luke Bateman has been creating works of art daily for over 10 years. His work has been shown in numerous galleries across New England and has been exhibited in public venues as well as online auctions and private collections. Throughout his career he has been repeatedly inspired by the color field movement and its principles. His work focuses heavily on color theory and geometry and its emotional implications in our current society. Luke says "A pretty picture is insufficient as a form of art. Creating art is about vulnerability and a connection with material. It has been that way for all of history across all cultures."

Statement

My work revolves around color and its effect on human emotion. Through my use of saturated color, I wish to evoke feelings associated with personal and spiritual reflection. Art is often overlooked and quickly passed by. People seldom take sufficient time to truly engage a work and think. I wish the viewer to take the opportunity to sit and contemplate the sensations evoked from the painting to see more than what is on the surface. I want my viewer to come to their own conclusions. I want to stray from current mainstream forms of artmaking which are so entrenched in politics, identity, and fashion. My paintings run counter to prevailing trends and grant my viewer the opportunity for personal reflection. Art as an experience should be freeing for all parties. I am not interested in classicism or idealist perfectionism. I am interested in the substance, sensuality, and serendipity of art. I do not believe a purely realist or hyper realist image can truly be art. Art at its core is about vulnerability and humanity, not the flaunting of one's own abilities.
