Interior Architecture + Design BS
About Julia D’Addozio
Julia D’Addozio is a senior at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture + Design. Julia is a member of Phi Sigma Sigma and served as both Recruitment Chair and President during her time in the chapter. Julia believes that design is about creating spaces that serve both people and the planet. Sustainability and functionality are at the forefront of every project Julia takes on, motivating her to become a LEED GA during her junior year. She believes that thoughtful design should enhance daily life while minimizing its environmental impact.
Through UMass Dartmouth’s Interior Architecture + Design program, Julia has learned to balance creativity with technical precision and to approach each project with intention and care. The program’s emphasis on sustainability and material consciousness has strengthened her commitment to responsible design, while studio projects have challenged her to think critically and adapt creatively. Working closely with peers and professors has taught her the importance of collaboration, problem-solving, and perseverance, lessons that have prepared her to face challenges with both curiosity and confidence.
Statement
This thesis explores the adaptive reuse of the historic Dartmouth Cotton Mill located in New Bedford, Massachusetts, transforming the abandoned industrial structure into Spindle & Loom, a LEED-certified sustainable hotel. In response to the growing urgency of climate change and the environmental impact of the built environment, this project investigates how sustainable interior design strategies can be integrated into the hospitality industry. Through extensive research on sustainable design practices, hospitality environments, and adaptive reuse, the project aims to demonstrate how existing buildings can be revitalized while minimizing environmental impact and preserving cultural history. The design seeks to create a hospitality experience that balances environmental stewardship with guest comfort and operational functionality. Ultimately, Spindle & Loom serves as a model for how sustainable design and historic preservation can work together to address climate challenges, foster community engagement, and reimagine neglected structures as resilient, environmentally responsible spaces.
