Statement
The senior thesis, Between Cascades, cultivates a new environment for memory and nursing care by creating points of connection and intentionality, where people of all ages, abilities, and character merge and come together. This project is deeply inspired by the interconnected nature of trees and forestry, and how each tree stands tall as an individual, yet connected to the larger whole of a forest through their roots, much like the connections we all make with one another throughout our lives. Spaces included in the campus’s design are the Woodland Community Center, multiple resident homes named after local tree species, and staff respite spaces, all interconnecting through intentional pathways to direct and facilitate residents and their families to the facility grounds and the greater site through nature. The facility grounds connect to a natural amphitheater, sensory light field, and on-site trails to further emphasize the interconnection of nature and the built environment. The design is dedicated to and in honor of Kory’s great grandfather, Jim, who stayed at Cascades in memory care.
