Art + Design BFA: Integrated Studio Arts
About Amanda Driscoll
Amanda Driscoll is an Integrated Studio Arts major pursuing a BFA at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She primarily works in traditional methods of oil paint and charcoal, exploring themes of self-acceptance, resilience, and individuality through the gesture of the figure. Drawing on lived experiences and her minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, Amanda visualizes a deeply personal intersection between the confining pressures of social approval and the embracement of one’s authentic queer self.
Statement
As an interdisciplinary artist, I manipulate the figure in my work to reflect an internal disconnection with conventional norms. Painting bodies allows me to analyze personal and communal experiences with identity and perception. The added emphasis of texture, like hair and fabric, captures a defiance of societal gender expectations, ultimately embracing powerful self-love and agency.
My work is rooted in tactile methods of painting, charcoal drawing, and sculpture that intertwine realism with energized gestural lines. By altering formal techniques with mixed media, I intend to reveal connections between the physical body and the intimate psychological world of a person. On a grand scale, I use atmospheric depth and bold saturated color to portray a narrative of rebellious autonomy within an inviting, comforting space that resonates with the viewer.
