The Office of Civil Rights offers the following catalog of in-person educational programs to students, faculty and staff that address issues related to discrimination and harassment prevention, Title IX and sexual misconduct, and unconscious bias.
Title IX & Sexual Misconduct
Course description: This education module will provide the participant with a comprehensive overview of Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), its evolution over the past 50+ years, and the statute’s application to and impact on institutions of higher education.
Participants will be provided with an overview of the following topics, including the
- Role of the Title IX Coordinator and Investigator;
- Actions which may constitute potential violations of Title IX;
- Available mechanisms to report violations of Title IX;
- Available supportive measures;
- Review of the University’s Title IX Grievance Procedure;
- Informal resolution process;
- Mechanics of the investigation and live hearing;
- Appeal process; and
- Respective roles and obligations of a “confidential resource” and “mandated reporter”.
Course duration: 75 minutes
Discrimination & harassment prevention
Course description: The objective of this education module is to help the participant to:
- Understand UMass Dartmouth’s Equal Employment Opportunity (“EEO”) Program and applicable policies related to discrimination and harassment prevention;
- Understand and identify acceptable and unacceptable behavior or conduct in the workplace or classroom/academic setting;
- Understand and identify behavior or acts that constitute discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation based on protected class status;
- Identify the available internal and external mechanisms available to report acts of discrimination, harassment and retaliation; and
- Understand the responsibilities as a UMass Dartmouth community member to create and maintain a harassment-free living, learning, and working environment.
Course duration: 60 minutes
Unconscious bias - what you see is not always what you get
Course description: The objective of this education module is to help the participant to:
- Understand the inherent and insidious nature of unconscious bias and the importance of addressing it within the workplace;
- Explore personal, cultural, and organizational barriers to addressing and intervening during moments of bias;
- Develop individual and institutional strategies and reduce bias in order to improve the workplace culture and campus environment for everyone.
Course duration: 60 minutes
