Sustainability Video Contest
Click here for an example video made by our Green Navigators last year. The Office of Campus and Community Sustainability at UMass Dartmouth is holding its first ever Sustainability Video Contest. This semester-long contest is an opportunity for students to be heard and express themselves about sustainability issues. The contest will be done through YouTube to make formatting concerns easier for both students and the contest committee. Submission forms can be found at The Sustainability Office's website, www.umassd.edu/sustainability. All contestants must upload their videos to YouTube first and include their URL links and contact information in the submission forms. All approved videos will then be uploaded to the Sustainability Office's website.
The guidelines for the contest are as follows:
- The content of submitted videos must center on an issue of sustainability. Possible topics include:
- Renewable energy
- Recycling
- Sustainable business practices
- Climate Change
- Peak Oil
- Green Building
- Consumption of Natural Resources
(This is only a short, indefinite list; there are many issues and concepts in sustainability to address. This list is being provided to give students ideas of what to submit.) - Video length can be no longer than 10 minutes, the maximum length of standard YouTube videos.
- Content must be factually sound and socially courteous; think about being informative without pointing the finger. Under no circumstances will the contest committee accept videos with slanderous, malicious, or inflammatory statements aimed at any person, business, or organization.
- No videos will be accepted if they contain discriminatory statements or behavior towards any ethnicity, race, culture, religion, or sexual orientation.
- Think of a PG rating during the production process. This rating is not set in stone, but the contest committee reserves the right to reject any submission based on its collective standards of decency and obscenity in conjunction with the mission of this contest.
- All videos must first be uploaded to YouTube and, therefore, must abide by its terms of service, community guidelines, and policies regarding copyright infringement.
- Videomaking technology is cheaper and easier to use than ever before. Don't just create a slide show or zoom in on grass and passing cars. Think of making a video that people would enjoy watching.
- Until the contest committee approves a submission, contestants can make no mention in their videos or the response and comment sections of their YouTube page of sponsorship or involvement with UMass Dartmouth and/or The Office of Campus and Community Sustainability.
The deadline for submissions is Monday, November 30. The winners will be announced and contacted Monday, December 14. The grand prize winner will receive a $100 certificate to a locally-owned restaurant or business. There will also be second, third, and fourth place prizes. For questions and more information, contact The Office of Campus and Community Sustainability at sustainability@umassd.edu or (508) 910-6484.
