Sustainability Assessment

In the Spring of 2007, the Chancellor signed the American College and University President's Climate Commitment, (www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org) which calls on our campus to become climate neutral 'as soon as possible.' In order to develop a carbon reduction plan, we are engaging in a comprehensive Campus Sustainability Assessment focused on nine target areas: Energy, Water, Buildings, Transportation, Land Use, Purchasing and Waste, Food, Health and Wellbeing, and Education and Culture.

Committees will be charged with conducting assessments in each of these areas to establish performance benchmarks, recognize progress, identify opportunities for improvement, and provide a road map for sustainable long-range planning and design. Our goals also include broadening the campus sustainability discussion; informing our curricula; engaging students, faculty, and staff in relevant research; and developing UMass Dartmouth as a regional leader in sustainability efforts. Our first report will be out in the fall of 2009.

Read more about our students' invaluable contributions to the assessment.
