SOA 351: The Breasted Body - fall

Critical analysis of breast and body as a socio-cultural construct. Beyond biology, we will view the body as a site where inequalities and hierarchies are inscribed and assess the social processes that have rendered the female breast a metonym of womanhood. The course is organized along the following questions: how and through what mechanisms have women¿s breasts been ¿fetishized, ¿commodified, ¿eroticized, ¿domesticated, ¿medicalized, and ¿politicized.  Students are expected to conduct independent research and learn to theorize the body as a social and cultural artifact.
