Award-winning novelist Toni Morrison, once hailed as America's greatest living writer, masterfully blends the political and the aesthetic across genres. Morrison connects art and aesthetics to the every-day world through attention to the particularity of Black experience, movement, and becoming. Engaging larger issues of race, gender and nationhood, she focuses deeply on giving voice to the varied human experience that makes up Black America and its histories. The class examines aesthetic intersections in Morrison's fiction and theorizing, including nuances of speech, lyricism, and structures of language.
