The Leo M. Sullivan “Teacher of the Year” Award Committee invites nominations for the 2020 award. Established in 1971, the “Teacher of the Year” Award is a memorial to the late Leo M. Sullivan, founder of and former professor and chairman of the Department of Psychology. It recognizes a colleague who has demonstrated a particular dedication to students through exceptionally meritorious teaching and advising. A $1,000 prize will accompany the award. The Leo M. Sullivan Teacher and Scholar of the Year awards, along with the ESU Service Award, will be presented at the Faculty Federation Annual Banquet. While this is normally held at the end of the Fall semester, the covid-19 pandemic has required that the 2020 banquet be held at the end of the Spring semester in 2021.
Committee members are not allowed to nominate. Previous awardees and faculty who have taught for less than three years are ineligible. Only dues paying members of the Faculty Federation are eligible to receive this award. The choice is made on the basis of teaching and advising as demonstrated through supporting evidence in the nomination papers. Evidence should comprise exceptional commendation by students and alumni, previously unrecognized activities and achievements, high estimation from colleagues and nontraditional work (including, but not limited to, research, exhibitions, and performances) that involves undergraduates and/or graduate students. The committee has always placed more value on documented specifics than general statements of praise. We recognize that preparing applications can be time-consuming. Prior candidates are encouraged to update applications and re-apply.
