Dual Enrollment Procedures
I. Overview
The Dual Enrollment partnership will center strong collaboration between the institutions and offer college coursework for local high school students. Through this program, both institutions aim to:
- Support student success and postsecondary awareness.
- Provide rigorous academic experiences and college credit opportunities.
- Expand curricular options for high school students.
II. Goals
UMass Dartmouth and the high school will collaborate on the following:
- Offer rigorous, credit-bearing college courses to eligible high school students.
- Enable students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously.
- Provide academic and career advising to support postsecondary planning.
- Facilitate student participation in college-readiness and enculturation activities.
III. Partnership Framework
A. Recruitment, Eligibility, and Enrollment
- Recruitment of qualified students will be a shared responsibility between UMass Dartmouth and the High School.
- The Office of Academic Partnerships at UMass Dartmouth will be responsible for sharing Dual Enrollment course offerings and registration processes, procedures, and timelines with the High School designee.
- The High School will name a member of their staff to serve as the Dual Enrollment contact person.
- Students will be enrolled only after receiving:
- Dual Enrollment Application
- Parent/Guardian Consent Form
- School Counselor Approval
Eligibility Criteria:
- Enrollment in a Massachusetts public or nonpublic secondary school (including homeschool).
- Massachusetts residency.
- No high school diploma or GED.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
- Completion of course prerequisites, as applicable.
- Students enrolled in UMass Dartmouth Early College programs are not eligible for Dual Enrollment courses during the fall and spring semesters.
Enrollment & Registration:
- Dual Enrollment Applications and course enrollment will be processed by the UMass Dartmouth Student Service Center (SSC).
- Students will receive email confirming enrollment and account activation instructions.
- Student may also receive communications from admissions and other university departments.
- Students must withdraw from a class through their university-issued COIN account.
- Course syllabi, academic calendars, and withdrawal deadlines follow university policies.
- Transcripts evidencing course enrollment and completion will be shared with the High School. FERPA release, acknowledging this data will be shared, is included in both the parent and student Dual Enrollment applications.
- Courses will appear on the high school transcript.
- School counselors will verify low-income status via the Virtual Gateway System at the time of application.
B. Course and Faculty Selection
- All courses will be selected from the UMass Dartmouth catalog.
- Courses will award at least three credits.
- Courses will meet MassTransfer Gen Ed Foundation requirements or be in computer science, technology, or engineering.
- Courses will be taught by UMass Dartmouth faculty.
C. Location of Classes
- Dual Enrollment courses will be offered fully online.
- Enrollment in on-campus courses may be approved on a case-by-case basis by the Office of Academic Partnerships.
D. Attendance Policies
- Students must comply with attendance requirements outlined in the course syllabus.
- Regular attendance is required to meet contact-hour requirements.
E. Conduct Policies
- Students must follow the High School’s code of conduct, as well as university and instructor-specific policies.
- Violations may result in disciplinary action from either institution.
F. Costs and Funding
- Eligible students may receive CDEP funding for one course per semester.
- Students are responsible for books, materials, and supplies.
- Students not eligible for CDEP funding will be charged $540 per course plus books and materials.
- If CDEP funding is unavailable, costs fall to the student or the High School. CDEP Funding is not guaranteed and is disbursed based on need and availability.
G. Evaluation
UMass Dartmouth and the High School will jointly evaluate the program each semester, considering:
- Pass and completion rates.
- Attendance and participation data.
- Postsecondary enrollment plans.
- College-readiness activity engagement.
- Student course evaluations.
Faculty evaluation will follow the guidelines outlined in the faculty contract.
