Introduction to the biological basis of behavior. Topics will include basic neuronal functioning and brain specialization, as well as the relation of other biological systems (e.g. sleep/wake cycles, circadian rhythms) to brain function and behavior.
Discussion of basic concepts and current topics of neuroscience, with the goal of enabling students to critically evaluate how the brain is depicted in the media. Articles from the popular press will be used as a starting point for lectures and classroom discussions.

Neuroscience of emotions, including animal models of emotion, human research on emotional expression and experience, emotion and social neuroscience, and cognition and emotion interactions. This seminar will emphasize the development of reading, oral, and writing skills. This course satisfies the University Studies Cluster 5A requirement and the depth requirement for the psychology major.
Advanced study of the physiology of the nervous system and the workings of the brain. Included is a working understanding of psychopharmacology in present day use. Practical application, side effects, and uses of medication in the mental health field today are of specific concern.

My academic experience (both in teaching and research) spans the areas of Psychology, Experimental Neuropsychology, and Cognitive Neuroscience. I am particularly interested in the assessment of human performance through different brain imaging, physiological, and behavioral techniques, and understanding how different factors, such as aging and physical activity affect structural and functional aspects of the brain.
