Theoretical and practical application of immunology and human genetics to immunohematology will be covered. The applied principles of transmission genetics and allelic expression in the formation of blood group antigens, quality management in transfusion medicine, and problem-based learning strategies to identifying clinically significant antibodies will be introduced in the course.

The principles of blood banking, including the preparation and storage of blood and its components, donor evaluation, transfusion, required record keeping, and processing of frozen blood. Clinical correlation, quality control and laboratory safety will be included. Enrollment requires a minimum grade of C- in all MLS courses.
