Financial Aid

Students on financial aid can apply much of their aid to study abroad programs. Once accepted to a specific study abroad program, the financial aid recipient is required to complete a Study Abroad Estimated Expenses Form (for faculty-led programs, Hessen or exchanges) or a Consortium Agreement (for third-party provider programs). These forms (and any required documentation) are first submitted to the IPO for verification, and then brought to the University Enrollment Center. Students should check their COIN account for changes and/or adjustments to their financial aid record. While additional money is not awarded for study abroad, students frequently qualify for a higher cap on the amount they can borrow at low student loan interest rates.

Students are encouraged to set up Direct Deposit in COIN, as this is the fastest way for students to receive funds due to them (instructions on how to set this up are available in COIN). Funds will not be released until approximately 10 days after UMassD's Add/Drop period.

Study Abroad Status

All students who participate in study abroad will be registered by the International Programs Office for EXH (“away on exchange”) status as a placeholder to show continuing status and the right to apply any pre-approved credits earned to their UMassD transcript. All students (with the exception of Hessen participants) will be billed a separate $250 study abroad fee.

Please download the Payment Information Sheet for ways to make a payment to UMassD. If preferred, a check made out to “University of Massachusetts Dartmouth” may be mailed or delivered in person to the address below. Please include a note with your name, student id number, program for which you are making a deposit or payment, and the term you will be studying abroad.
