Finances & Scholarships

Financial Aid

Students who receive financial aid (including loans) can apply much of their aid to study abroad programs. For more information on which types of aid are transferable to study abroad, please see Before You Board - Bringing Your Financial Aid Abroad. Once students have been accepted or nominated to their program in Via (the IPO's study abroad application portal), financial forms that detail the estimated cost of the study abroad program will be required. Students will be able to find these forms in Via. Students should check their COIN account for changes and/or adjustments to their financial aid record. While additional money is not awarded for study abroad, students frequently qualify for a higher cap on the amount they can borrow at low student loan interest rates.

Students are encouraged to set up Direct Deposit in COIN, as this is the fastest way for students to receive funds due to them (instructions on how to set this up are available in COIN). Funds will not be released until approximately 10 days after UMassD's Add/Drop period.

Study Abroad Status

All students who participate in study abroad will be registered by the International Programs Office for EXH (“away on exchange”) status as a placeholder to show continuing status and the right to apply any pre-approved credits earned to their UMassD transcript. All students (with the exception of Hessen Partnership participants) will be billed a separate $250 study abroad fee.

Payment

Payments may be made by check or money order (made out to “University of Massachusetts Dartmouth”) and mailed or delivered in person to the address below. Please include a note with your name, student id number, program for which you are making a deposit or payment, and the term you will be studying abroad.
