At the Writing and Multiliteracy Center, we have three types of appointments available, in-person, synchronous online, and asynchronous online. Synchronous means that you will meet with a tutor "live" and have the ability to speak with them via video, audio, and/or text chat.
You must schedule an appointment at least a half hour prior to the appointment's start time, though we recommend booking at least twenty-four hours in advance. Appointments can be made for a half hour or a full hour, with a maximum of one appointment per day and three per week.
If you'd prefer to watch a video that will walk you through how to make an appointment, check out this one from our TikTok page.
Scheduling An In-Person Appointment
In-person appointments can be scheduled by speaking to a member of our staff in LARTS 221 Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. You can also book an in-person session via our scheduling software. You will need to use your UMassD credentials to log in.
Scheduling and Accessing a Synchronous Online Appointment
Online appointments can be scheduled by dropping by LARTS 221 and requesting an online session, or by booking using our scheduler. Online appointments are available during our daytime hours as well as on evenings and weekends. You will need to be logged in to our scheduler in order to meet with your tutor online.
Not all of our staff members tutor online, so please make sure that you book with a tutor who has "Online" listed next to their name in the scheduler.
We use a software called WConline for our online appointments. If you need help accessing your online session, this short video will walk you through the process.
Asynchronous Feedback
If you would prefer to receive feedback asynchronously, you can email your assignment, accompanying assignment materials (e.g., rubrics, assignment sheets) and any specific questions that you have for your tutor to WMC.Info@umassd.edu. You will receive a video response from one of our tutors and a written summary of feedback. For this option, please allow 48 hours in order to give our tutor time to read over your work and craft their response.
Canceling and Missed Appointments
Appointments can be modified or canceled by speaking to a member of staff in LARTS 221 or by logging in to the scheduler. Clicking on your appointment will open a pop-up window with a "cancel appointment" button at the bottom right.
Because last-minute cancellations prevent others from scheduling this time with a tutor, you will be unable to cancel your appointment within a half-hour of the appointment's starting time. If a last-minute emergency prevents you from attending an appointment, please contact your tutor directly. Your tutor's email address can be found in the appointment pop-up window.
If you fail to show up for your meeting, your appointment will be marked as a "no-show." Two "no-shows" will result in an inability to access the scheduler and your account will be deactivated. If your account is deactivated, you must contact the WMC's Director, Dr. Elisabeth Buck, to initiate a conversation about re-activating your account.
